Healthy tips for the election season

Here we are, knee-deep in the current election season. Perhaps you’re like me and find elections to be highly stressful—it’s one thing to be informed; it’s quite another thing to be inundated. During an election, the media covers every second of the action. No wonder it’s so challenging to not get sucked in and overwhelmed by what’s going on!

What then can we do to stay engaged and motivated to support making the world a better place, while protecting ourselves from burnout and negativity?

That’s where healthy boundaries come in. Here’s a list of wellness tips that can support you on this journey.

Limit your news exposure

Watching the news 24-7 is not healthy for anyone, and it’s easier than ever with smart phones, social media, and of course, regular television. It’s so important to be mindful of how much news you’re watching and limit accordingly to avoid unnecessary stress.

Focus on what you can control and what positive actions you can take

Examine the areas that are realistically under your control and direct your energy toward them: things like voting or joining a voter registration drive to encourage others to put their voice where the ballot box is. Perhaps volunteer to campaign for the candidates you feel strongly about. Remember, you cannot control the electoral outcome, but you can control how you choose to spend your time and energy.

Make your voting plan

Having a voting plan will ensure your ballot is received on time and counted. If you’re voting in person, know where you’re headed on Election Day, or where to mail your ballot if you’re doing vote by mail. If you’re mailing in your ballot, do it right away. That helps take the stress off.

Practice compassion and self-care

Everyone handles and displays stress differently. This election season show, some extra patience, for yourself and others. Also, be sure you’re taking care of yourself. Be extra mindful of your diet, sleep, and exercise. Taking care of your physical health can make a big difference during a stressful time.

Find things to be hopeful for

As the hate and division continues to mount as election season goes on, it’s important to make a conscious effort to search for hope and optimism. Start by adding more positive things into your daily routine, like listening to an uplifting podcast, starting a gratitude journal, having a regular exercise routine, or spending more time in nature. By intentionally focusing on the good all around you, you can foster a more optimistic mindset that helps you navigate through challenging times with more grace and ease. By focusing on what you can control and nurturing the positive aspects of your life, you can help ease your election anxiety and maintain a sense of balance during these uncertain times. If you’re headed to the polls or dropping off your ballot, your voice is being heard and counted. Every vote counts—how cool is that? Regardless of who wins or loses, these election season emotions are temporary. They will subside after the votes are counted. Life will go on. So, make sure you’re tending to your self-care during this election season.
